ELLEN CORDDRY TO EXHIBIT “WOODCUTS AND WATERCOLORS” FOR MONTH OF JUNE AT ARTISTS’ GALLERY IN OLD ELLICOTT CITY IN CONJUNCTION WITH

ELLICOTT CITY ART HOP ON JUNE 10

Artists’ Gallery, on Main Street in Ellicott City, will present “Woodcuts and Watercolors” by local artist Ellen Corddry for the month of June. The show will run from May 29-June 25 with an opening reception, on Saturday, June 10 from 6-10 p.m. at the gallery, located at 8197 Main Street, Ellicott City.

The reception will be in conjunction with the Ellicott City Art Hop on June 10, when the art galleries and art-related shops in town will stay open later into the evening and host various events at their locations. At Artists’ Gallery, Corddry will demonstrate the process of designing a woodcut, transferring the design to the wood block, and cutting the wood. She will also make a few small prints on the spot. The demo will take place from 6:30-7:00 p.m..

A graduate of Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Corddry often combines watercolors and woodcuts, juxtaposing the heavy, black lines of the woodcut with the translucence of watercolor. “I like the flexibility and immediacy of watercolor, which can be mixed with collage, pastels and crayons for added depth and texture. The woodcut allows for the pleasure of cutting into wood and the making of prints,” commented Corddry.

Corddry’s work was recently featured in a pop-up exhibit on the Maryland Public Television show, “Artworks” (www.mpt.org/programs/artworks-season5/) and she has exhibited extensively throughout Maryland. She has also illustrated several books.

Her work will be displayed in the gallery’s featured artist space on the lower floor and the remainder of the space will feature work by the other Artists’ Gallery members.

Artists’ Gallery is a member-owned gallery representing media that include oil, watercolor, collage, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, traditional photography, hand-colored photography, digital painting, stained glass, wood-cut prints, mixed media, quilts and wooden objects.

Hours: Tues-Wed. 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; Thurs.-Sat., 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sun., 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Closed on Monday
